Staff Correspondent: A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its explanation in which authority Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya holds his cabinet and parliament memberships.

Advocate Younus Ali Akond filed the petition on Tuesday morning. Chief Election Commissioner and Speaker to the National Parliament have been made defendants on the writ.

The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam might conduct the hearing of the writ on Wednesday, said the petitioner.

Earlier on last Tuesday (June 30) Akond served a legal notice over Maya’s legitimacy as lawmaker and minister. The lawyer filed the writ as the minister did not respond to his notice.

On June 14, Supreme Court cancelled a High Court verdict that acquitted minister and senior Awami League leader Maya from 13-year jail sentence in a corruption case.

Following the verdict, Akond served the notice in ‘public interest’ saying that Maya has been legally disqualified to serve as minister or lawmaker after the apex court’s verdict.

On June 13 in 2007, ACC filed the case against Maya with Sutrapur police station on charge of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk29 lakh and concealing information about it.
