DU student made record by memorising Charyapada

Campus Correspondent, DU, May 6: A student of Dhaka University could able to memorise and recited the whole book of Charyapada, the earliest extant Bangla poems, from memory becoming the first Bangladeshi to achieve the feat.
Zakerul Islam Kayes, a third year student of Bangla Department of the varsity, recited more than 46 verses of the ancient book at a function held at RC Mazumder Auditorium of DU on Tuesday noon.
Dr. Soumitra Sekhar, a professor of Bangla department presided over the function. Israfil Alam, Awami League lawmaker of Naogaon-6 constituency, was present as the chief guest.
“Charyapada is a tough book to memorise. Zakerul showed his intellect by memorising and reciting the poems," Sr. Soumitra said.
Charyapada, also known as Charyagiti, dating back to at least the 9th century, is a manuscript of writings on palm-leafs containing the poems. The book was discovered in the library of the royal court of Nepal in 1907 by HARAPRASAD SHASTRI.
