Niaz Mahmud and Tanzina Eva, DHAKA, Nov 13: The gold reserve of Bangladesh Bank has stood 13,500 kg. According to sources, the Customs Department seized 3,50 kg gold (six mounds) in 11 months (February- November) in the country’s airports.
Sources in Currency Department of Bangladesh Bank about 13,500 kg gold worth Tk five thousand and six hundred crore has been deposited as reserve.
Of the total gold, about 12,000 kg has been deposited to Bank of England and HSBC and rest of it has been deposited to Currency Department of central bank.
Sources also said most of reserved gold has come from smugglers. The government also buys gold in some times to increase reserve.
M Mahfuzur Rahman of Bangladesh Bank told risingbd that the gold seized from smugglers comes to the central bank but its reports go to court. If the court proves the gold is illegal then the government becomes owner of the gold.
