14 JMB members awarded 20 yrs imprisonment

Staff Correspondent, Tangail: A court in Tangail on Tuesday sentenced 14 members of Jamaatul Mujaheedin Bangladesh (JMB) to 20 years rigorous imprisonment in a case filed for serial bombing in the district on August 17, 2005.

The court also fined them TK 30,000 each, in default of which they will have to suffer three years more in jail.

Judge Abul Mansur Miah of First Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court delivered the verdict after examining the witnesses and records of the case.

The convicts are Yeamin Mia, son of Moslemuddin, Habil, son of Mollah Mia, Rustam, son of Modhu Mia, Tarikul, son of Abdullahhel Baki, Mizan, son of Sobur master, Abdul Ahad, son of Razzak Munshi, Arman, son of Akhom Azad, Abdullah Al Mamun and Rasel, sons of late Nuruzzaman, Habibur Rahman, son of Sajahan Mia, Ziaur Rahman, son of Sultan Hossain, Delwar Hossain, son of Deen Mohammad, Shahidul Islam, son of Motahar Ali and Abdullah Al Tasmin, son of late Abdul Hamid. Among them, Arman, Rasel, Tarikul and Tasmin are on the run.

According to the case statement, the convicts exploded bombs at Babystand, court premises, Shaheed Joglu road of the town on August 17, 2005.

Later on the day, sub-inspector (SI) of Tangail Sadar Police Station Borhan Uddin filed a case in this connection.

Additional Public Prosecutor of the district Monirul Islam moved for the state while state-appointed Advocate Shamim Chowdhury stood for the accused.
