16 killed in road crashes across country

Desk Report: At least 16 people were killed and 21 others were injured in separate road crashes across the country on Thursday.

Rajshahi: Two youths were killed as a truck ran over them at Gollapukur of the district's Puthia upazila at the noon.

The deceased were identified as Tushar Hossain, 22, son of late Abdul Latif of Kedurmore area of the city, and his nephew, (son of brother) Shahin Ali, 20, son of Nazmul Islam.

Monirul Islam, In-Charge of Paba Highway Police outpost, said the duos were heading to Natore by a motorbike. On their way, an opposite head truck hit their motorbike at Gollapukur intersection on Dhaka-Rajshahi highway. The truck pulled them nearly 200 yards forward and then it plunged into a roadside ditch, after leaving them dead on the spot. Later, police recovered their bodies.

The bodies were sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital for autopsy, he added.

Though the driver managed to flee the scene, he was identified by police. A case would be filed in this regard, he added.

In Pabna, two youths were killed in motorcycle crash as they ran it recklessly at Muladuli sugarcane field area of the district's Ishwardi upazila at the noon.

The deceased were identified as Ashraful Islam, 25, son of Hasibur Rahman of Arzoparha village of Atghoria upazila, and Shipon Hossain, 23, son of Khalilur Rahman of Dari Nazirpur village of the same upazila.

SI Gonesh Chandra Mondal, In-Charge of Pakshi highway police outpost, said they skidded off the motorbike and fell on the highway when they suddenly pressed break of it during reckless driving, leaving them dead on the spot.

Tangail: Two women were killed and another was injured as a microbus but hit them at Nijborni upazila of the district's Dhonbari upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Ruba Begum, 32, wife of Babul Bakul of the area, Sahaton, 50, wife of Abdul Majid  of Balutia area.

The injured was known as Obaida Begum, 40, wife of Abdullah Al-Mamun Jewel of Boula area of the upazila. She was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital.

Mojibor Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhonbari Police Station, confirmed the news.

Sirajganj: At least four people including three of a family were killed and five others were injured in a collision between a bus and a microbus at Royhati area of the district's Solonga upazila in the wee hours of Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Soleman Hossain, 65, son of late Kiyamot Mondal of Dhamgarha village under Kahalu of Bogra, his son Harunor Rashid's wife Lily Akter, 35, her son Sagor Hossain, 12, and microbus driver Abdul Khaleque, 32, son of Akkas Ali of Jaroi village under Bera upazila of Pabna.

Of the injured, Sabuj, 18, son of Harunor Rashid, and Mansur Rahman, 30, son of Imar Uddin.

Abdul Quader Zilani, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hatikumrul highway police station, confirmed the news.

Gopalganj: At least six people including five of a family were killed and 15 others were injured in collision between a bus and a micros bus at Majhigati village of the district's Kashiani upaizla in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Halim Akond, 40, Saudi immigrant of Khuliakhali village under Shoronkhola upazila of Bagerhat, his wife Asma Begum, 32, her brother-in-law Badal Farazi, 35, her sons Sujon, 17, Sihab, 8, and the microbus driver.

The injured were passengers of the bus collided with the microbus. Of them, eight injured were admitted to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex.
