2.5 lakh people marooned in Sylhet

Sylhet Correspondent: Due to onrush of water from the upstream and heavy rainfall, the water level at the Surma, Kushiyara Rivers has increased, worsening the flood situation in six upazilas of Sylhet district.

Besides, more than 2.5 lakh people have been marooned as low-lying areas of these upazilas have been inundated.

Rolling water from hills flooded the many villages causing extensive damage to crop fields, fish, cattle and poultry farms.

Shahidul Islam Chowdhury, additional deputy commissioner of Sylhet said, Surma, Kushiyara Rivers were flowing above danger level due to onrush of water from India's Assam.

As a result, more than fifty villages under Fenchuganj, Golapganj, Beanibazar, Balaganj, Osmani Nagar and Zakiganj went under water, he added.
