274 killed in road crashes during Eid rush

Staff Correspondent: At least 274 people were killed and 848 others were injured in 205 separate road accidents occurred across the country during the Eid rush.

However, a total of 240 accidents happened on roads, rails and water ways collectively which took at least 311 lives and put 862 injured in the incidents during the Eid, according to Bangladesh Passengers' Welfare Association.

Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, secretary general of the association, came up with the disclosure in a press conference at Crime Reporters Association Auditorium in the capital's Segunbagicha on Tuesday.

The press conference was arranged by the association to release "The Eid Journey Accident Report-2017" which was prepared by its monitoring cell.

The association has been observing the matter for four years as road mishaps are alarmingly increasing day by day during Eid rush, according to the report.

Though people felt relived as they enjoyed leaves on rationing system on Eid this year, road accidents and losing lives and damages have increased, the report revealed.

During the 13-day Eid rush (from June 19 to July 1), at least 205 road accidents happened across the country which took 274 lives. 848 people were also injured in the incidents, the report read.

Alongside, three people were killed and 14 others were injured in a water transport accident. Besides, 34 people were crushed under train including 25 in East region and nine in West during the period.

Members of Bangladesh Passengers' Welfare Association's monitoring cell prepared the report based on news published in 22 daily national newspapers, six local dailies and 10 online news portals.
