4 foreigners among 9 held for cheating in FB

Staff Correspondent: Nine people, including four foreign citizens, have been arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from the capital city on charge of cheating people through social media Facebook.

In a separate drive, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Detective Branch of police (DB) personnel detained the fraud gang on Wednesday night.

The detainees are- Jhon Agodi UGO, Liza Akther alias Eshta, Afeez, Mohammad Mohsin Sheikh, Tasmia Parveen alias Shimu, Mikel Eugene Obumneme and Namdi Kelvin.

The law enforcers also detained two human traffickers named Jamal Hossain and Mozibur Rahman.

Detectives said that the detainees confessed their guilt during primary investigation.

Following the issue, DB joint commissioner Abdul Baten said that the fraud gangs opened Facebook ID using fake name. Posing as foreigners, they send Facbook Friend Request or emails to people in Bangladesh expressing desire to invest in the country as they have a lot of money.

“When someone responds to their emails on investment, they send various supportive documents and build up relationship with the victims and ask them to send money to process their investment,” Baten added.

Abdul Baten also said that a man named Kamruzzaman became a victim of similar fraud activities. He lost Tk. 25.44 lakh by the fraud gang.
