87 including army men killed in landslide

Desk Report: At least 87 people including several army men have been killed in landslide in three districts, followed by Monday’s daylong rainfall that was influenced by a depression in the Bay.

The death toll is feared to be risen as the rescue operations were ongoing while the report was filed.

In Chittagong: At least 23 people were killed in Chandnaish and Rangunia  upazilas.

Four people including three children were killed in landslide due to incessant downpour at Dhopachhorhi of the district's Chandnaish upazila early Tuesday.

Two people were also injured in the incident who were sent to Bandarban Sadar Hospital.

The deceased were identified as Mahia Mahi (child), Keosa Khiyang, 10, Memau Khiyang, 13 and housewife Mokai Khiyang, 50.

The injured are Sanui Khiyang, 21, and Belau Khiyang, 28.

Abu Yousuf, former chairman of Dhopachhorhi union parishad, confirmed the death toll.

Meanwhile, 19 people were killed in hill collapse at Rangunia upazila of the district.

A man was also killed in wall collapse due the rainfall at Foillatoli area of Halishohor in Chittagong Metropolitan area.

He was ascertained as Mohammad Hanif, 45, according to local ward councillor Abu Hossain.

In Rangamati: At least 58 people were killed in landslide in the district town and its different upazillas due to the downpour.

Reports of hill collapse started coming from different areas— Jubo Unnayan, Vedvedi, Shimultoli and Rangapani.

Eight deceased were identified as Ruma Aktar, Nuria Aktar, Hajera Begum, Sonali Chakma, Amit Chakma, Ayush Mollik, Liton Mollik, and Chumki Das.

Meanwhile, two more people—Unu Ching Marma and Niki Marma marma—were killed in landslide at Karigarparha area in Raikhali union of Kaptai upazila.

Raikhali Union Parishad Chairman Chhayamong Marma confirmed the matter.

Md Rashid, officer-in-charge of Rangamati Kotwali Police Station, said the death toll may increase as many people still remained trapped.

In Bandarban: At least six people were killed and five others were injured in the incidents of hill collapse due to continuous rain at Balaghata, Lemujhiri parha and Agaparha of the district town in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Reba Tripura, 24, Lata Barua, 7, Mitu Barua, 5, Shuvo Barua, 4, Kamrun Nahar, 40, and Supriya Begum, 8.

Of the injured, Posan Tripura, 22, Bir Bahadur Tripura, 16 and Dujakin Tripura were ascertained immediately.

Swapon Kumar Bose, Sub-Officer of Bandarban Fire Service, confirmed the news.
