BNP terms verdict against 16th amendment ‘victory of people’

Senior Correspondent: BNP sees the Supreme Court’s verdict that upheld a previous High Court verdict declaring illegal the 16th amendment of the constitution as a victory for the people.

Rizvi Ahmed, senior joint secretary of the party, said this while talking to reporters at a press briefing at Nayapaltan office in the capital on Monday.

Welcoming the Supreme Court’s verdict that upheld the illegality of parliament’s authority to impeach judges, Rizvi said, “The government’s plot to control the judiciary has been thwarted through this verdict. BNP is terming the Supreme Court’s decision as a victory for the people.

'The authority to impeach Supreme Court judges was bestowed on the parliament through the 16th amendment of the constitution. The apex court today unanimously declared the amendment illegal, dismissing a government appeal filed against the previous High Court verdict," the BNP leader told the press briefing.

He further said this verdict will be helpful to establish the independence and good governance of the judiciary.

“Through this verdict, the assurance of people to get justice has been pegged deeper,” he added.

The Supreme Court today (Monday) scrapped the 16th amendment of the constitution, declaring it illegal, which became main issue of debate in the country as it had given the parliament an authority to impeach apex court judges.
