Bengal`s Nawab buried at Intellectuals` Graveyard

DHAKA, Sept 13: The remains of noted actor Anwar Hossain were laid to eternal rest at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard on Friday afternoon.
Anwar Hossain, the Nawab of Bengali films, breathed his last at the Square Hospital in the capital at 2.30 after Thursday midnight. His body was kept at the Square Hospital mortuary at night. He was 82.
His coffin was first taken to his residence at Kalabagan on Friday morning where members of the film fraternity flocked to see him for one last time.
From Kalabagan his body was taken to Baitul Mukarram National Mosque for the first namaz-e-janaza, and after that the remains were taken to FDC, where he had worked for over 50 years, for a second namaz-e-janaza.
Co-workers, friends and admirers of the veteran actor paid their last tributes at FDC described him as an ideal man until very end.
Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu, actors Razzak, ATM Shamsuzzaman, Alamgir, Ujjal, Prabir Mitra, Omar Sunny, Helal Khan, Misha Saudagar, directors Kazi Hayat and Md Hannan went there to pay him their last respects.
From the FDC, his body was taken to the Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard at Mirpur for burial.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia have mourned his death in separate messages.
It was his lead role in 60’s ‘Nawab Sirajuddowla’ that earned him the nickname of ‘Nawab without a crown’.
The noted actor received the National Film Award for best actor in the film “Lathial” in 1975, and again for “Golapi Ekhon Train-e”, this time as supporting actor, in 1978.
He won the National Film Award for the third time for another stellar performance in “Dayi Ke” in 1987.
In 2012, the prominent actor was received Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the movie industry.
The veteran artiste had acted in over 500 films.
His other notable Bangla films are “Shurjoshnan,” “Khacher Dewal,” “Dui Diganta,” “Raja Elo Shoharey,” “Godhulir Prem,” “Rupban,” “Etotuku Asha,” “Saat Bhai Champa,” Neel Akasher Niche,” “Ka-Kha-Ga-Gha-Uma,” “Ghurnijhor,” “Sharalipi,” “Jibon Theke Neya,” “Ghani” and so on.
Beside Bangla, Anwar Hossain also acted in Urdu films. His most noticeable works on Urdu films are “Nachghor,” “Bahana” and “Ujala” and prospered there too.
