Biswajit murder case: HC upholds death for two

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has upheld the verdict that gave death penalties to two in the murder of Biswajit Das.

The two death convicts are- Rafiqul Islam Shakil and Rajon Talukdar.

The HC bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty pronounces the verdict on Sunday.

Previously sentenced to death, Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, Emdadul Haque Emdad, GM Rasheduzzaman Shaon and  Noor-e-Alam Limon were given life imprisonment.

Earlier on July 17, the HC fixed August 6 to deliver its verdict on the death references and appeals in the sensational Biswajit Das murder after concluding hearing on the death references and appeals.

The court on May 16 started hearing on the death reference and appeals in the sensational murder case.

On February 26, Chief Justice SK Sinha fixed the bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty to take the case on priority basis.

On February 19, the authorities concerned of the HC division prepared the paper book of the murder case containing all the details of the case, trial proceedings, statements, evidence, verdicts and other documents.

Metropolitan Magistrate Zahurul Haque framed the charges against the 21 activists of Jagannath University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), associate body of the ruling party Awami League, on June 2, 2013.

On March 5, Tajul Islam, DB inspector and investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against the 21 accused.

On December 18, 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced eight activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League, to death and 13 others to life imprisonment for killing tailor-shop employee Biswajit Das.

Fourteen appeals were filed with the HC by the convicts challenging the lower court verdict against them in the case.

Biswajit, 24, was hacked to death in public on his way to his tailoring shop at Shakharibazar in Old Dhaka during a countrywide road-blockade programme on December 9, 2012.
