Blast hits kindergarten in eastern China

International Desk: An explosion has rocked a kindergarten in eastern China, with women and children among the casualties reported.

The blast happened near the entrance to the building in the city of Fengxian on Thursday afternoon.

Local police said an unknown number of people had been injured, including children.

State media reports said people have been hurt and unverified photos purportedly from the scene and posted on social media showed children and adults lying on the ground, some bleeding.

Police said the blast struck at 4.50pm at the Chuangxin Kindergarten in Jiangsu province.

It was unclear whether the blast was an accident or was deliberately caused.

The explosion appeared to have been caused by a bottle of cooking gas, according to local newspaper Xiandaikuaibao on its website.

Kindergartens in China have been targeted before in apparent revenge attacks carried out by people bearing grudges against their neighbors and society.

China maintains tight control over firearms and most attacks are carried out using knives, axes or homemade explosives.
