‘Despite disagreement we respect verdict’

Senior Correspondent: Law Minister Anisul Haque has said we have disagreement but we respect the verdict of the Supreme Court on the Sixth Amendment.

The reasons under which the Appellate Division rejected the sixteenth amendment that are not acceptable, the minister said.

The law minister said this while speaking at a briefing at the conference room of the ministry in the city on Thursday.

The government has not yet taken any decision on the Supreme Court verdict that scrapped the 16th amendment to the constitution, he said.

 Huq said the government was 'aggrieved' by the top court's verdict, but was yet to seek a review.
 
"We are considering whether to appeal for a review. We are yet to decide as the full verdict is being scrutinised”, he said.

The apex court on July 3 upheld a previous High Court verdict that declared illegal the 16th amendment, which had empowered the parliament to remove its judges for incapacity or misconduct.

On August 1, the SC released the 799-page text of the verdict after its six judges including Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha signed it.'
