Farhad Mazhar was not kidnapped: IGP

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque

Staff Correspondent: Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque claimed that writer, columnist and poet Farhad Mazhar, who was rescued 18 hours after his missing, was not kidnapped, rather he left his home and returned on his own accord.

The police chief came up with the claim while addressing a press conference at the police headquarters in Dhaka on Thursday.

On that day, law enforcers rescued Farhad Mazhar after 18 hours of efforts. During this time, he talked to his wife Farida Aktar over phone ten times and his fan Archona Rani six times, the IGP said.

Shahidul Hoque said, “Farhad Mazhar sent TK 15,000 to Archona Rani in two phases through using mobile financial service 'rocket' of Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd (DBBL) sometimes before 7:00pm on July 3. Police suspect that the writer came out of his home only because of that woman.”

In the wee hours of July 3, Farhad Mazhar reportedly went missing from his Adabor house in the capital. Later, the law enforcers rescued him around 11:30pm on the same day when he was returning to Dhaka from Khulna in a Hanif Paribahan bus.
