Hill collapse: 2 army officials killed in rescue drives

Staff Correspondent, Chittagong: Two army personnel were killed while carrying out rescue operations following Rangamati hill collapse caused by daylong downpour yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Major Mahfuj and Captain Shamim. Both of them were in service in Rangamati Army Region.

Sources said the army officials were killed in landslide while they were removing soil from roads in Manikchhari around 11:00am on Tuesday.

Mongkhyo Singh Chowdhury Marma, a residential physician of Rangamati Sadar Hospital, confirmed the death of the two army officials.

Their bodies have been kept at the hospital morgue, he said.

Rangamati Sadar Hospital's Civil Surgeon Dr Shaheed Talukdar said 13 bodies including the two army officials killed in landslide have been kept at the hospital morgue.

Casualties of army members were reported although the death toll could not be ascertained, according to online version of a popular daily newspaper quoting the Inter Service Public Relations Directorate (ISPR).
