Hilsa gets recognition of Bangladesh’s GI product

Staff Correspondent: After Jamdani sari, the fish hilsa has been recognized as the geographical indication (GI) product of Bangladesh.

Hilsa has got the recognition as the second GI product of Bangladesh from the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT).

DPDT officials said they have completed all the formalities for the registration process of hilsa as GI product.

The registration certificate will be handed over to the department of fisheries (DOF) within a week, they added.

Earlier, the department of fisheries applied for the registration of hilsa as a GI product of Bangladesh. A gazette notification was issued in this regard on June 1 this year after scrutinising the application.

According to the law, anyone from home or abroad can submit a notice of objection against the application within two months of the gazette notification. But no one submitted any such notice by this timeframe, that's why Bangladesh has secured the GI of this product.
