'History has been distorted in 16th amendment verdict'

Staff Correspondent: Law Minister Anisul Huq said the history has been distorted by the observation made in the 16th constitutional amendment.

Referring to the Chief Justice's observation on page 702 of the verdict that "No nation, no country is made of or by one person", the minister said "There is no doubt that history has been distorted by the remark."

Law Minister said this while speaking at "Meet the Reporters" programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital on Sunday.

Anisul Huq said, "Though there has not been mentioned the word Bangabandhu in the verdict, But "no nation, no country is made of or by one person" has been penned in it. Firstly it is irrelevant in this case, secondly is contrary to the history and finally it is equal to distorting the history."

The government will file a review petition with the Supreme Court seeking expunction of some of the remarks of the chief justice in the 16th amendment case verdict, he added.

The minister however did not specify date for filing the petition.

The government is thoroughly scrutinizing the full text of the verdict, Huq said.
