Youth killed in robber-police firing in Jhalakathi

Jhalakathi Correspondent: A suspected robber was killed in the incident of firing between robbers and police at Berpasha area on Barisal-Khulna regional highway under Jhalakathi sadar upazila in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Three cops including Faruk Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station, were also injured in the incident.

Law enforcers also seized arms and bullets from the spot.

MM Mahmud Hassan, additional superintendent of police (ASP-Sadar Circle), confirmed the news.

He said, acting on a tip-off, a team of police went Berpasha area as a gang of robbers were taking preparations for robbery there. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, they fired at them. Cops also retaliated for self-defence that triggered a gun-battle, leaving three police men injured.

Later, law enforcers found an unknown youth sustained bullet injury at the spot. He was rushed to Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead, he added.

However, other robbers managed to flee the scene, he said.

Police recovered a shooter gun, a round of fresh bullet, a Chinese axe, a big machete, a knife, a handsaw and a rope from the spot.
