'Passenger service in metro rail to be started in due time'

Staff Correspondent: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that metro rail is one of the major projects of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Passenger service in metro rail will be started in due time.

The minister made the opinion while inaugurating the construction of the elevated viaduct and nine stations of the country’s much talked about metro rail in city.

He said that the construction of metro rail stepped ahead more. The construction work was stopped for eight months due to Gulshan militant attack. But the work will be completed at the scheduled time.

The minister also said that the total cost of the metro rail project is Tk 22,000 crore, of which Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) is providing TK16,600 crore. The government will provide rest of the amount.

The 20-km metro rail will have a total of 16 stations through Uttara, Mirpur, Rokeya Sarani, Khamarbari, Farmgate, Sonargaon Hotel, Shahbagh, Doel Chattar and Topkhana road.

Executive Director, DTCA. Mr. Syed Ahmed, Metro rail project director Aftab Uddin Khan and other high officials attended the programme.
