Production of tobacco must be stopped: Muhith

Special Correspondent: Tobacco products are harmful to public health, saying this; Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith reiterated his position against tobacco products.

He said, "About 80 percent of the tobacco market is filled with low quality Bidis. These tobacco products are serious harmful for health. So, step is being taken to stop production of Bidis in the country."

The minister made the disclosure while addressing newsmen after a meeting at his secretariat on Sunday.

Muhith said, "British American Tobacco Company and other tobacco companies expressed their opinion in today's meeting. We have heard their words. Decision will be taken later in this regard."

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Mohammad Nazibur Rahman and other high officials attended the programme.
