Punish the persons who are responsible

The boiler explosion and casualties occurred again in a factory. At least 13 people were killed and nearly half hundred were injured in a boiler explosion in a clothing factory named Multifabs Ltd in Nayapara area of Kashimpur, near Gazipur city corporation.

The factory was supposed to open on Tuesday after the Eid holiday. But the boiler section of the dyeing unit was opened the previous day.

When the boiler exploded in a sudden blast, the ground floor of the four-storey building and two side walls of the second floor, doors,  windows and machines were flown and scattered in different places. At that time some pedestrians who were traveling in front of the factory were also injured. As a result of the explosion, the buildings in the adjoining factory shook and the doors and windows were broken.

Boiler blasts are not the first of these. Earlier, there were many casualties occurred in boiler explosions. According to the news published in media, at least 78 people died in such incidents in the last one year. Six people were killed in a boiler explosion at Smart Metal Chemical Industries Ltd at Pubail in Gazipur on January 23 last year. On September 10 of that year, 42 people died in a similar accident at Tampaco Foils Factory in Tongi. More than half of them were wounded. On April 19 this year, 17 people were killed and 25 others injured in a boiler blast at Gopalganj Jamuna Auto Rice Mills in Dinajpur.

The question is why such incidents happen repeatedly. It is alleged that the workers died due to not implementing the proper law at more than five thousand risky industrial establishments across the country. Large explosions and accidents are occurring occasionally in these industrial units or factories. Hundreds of workers are being killed in this reason.

Fire service officials say these accidents are happening due to negligence of factory owners. In most cases, the boilers dare date expired. But the owners do not change those. Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) of the Ministry of Labour and Employment are responsible for supervision. Lack of skilled workers, technicians, proper management and supervision, boiler blasts are repeatedly occurring.

According to the office sources, there are only six people in the country for inspecting five thousand registered boilers.

Workers complain that irresponsibility of factory owners and risky environment are main reason for the incidents. As they are not getting exemplary punishment, the accident is happening one after another.

It has been found that, owners give much attention to making profit rather than security of the workers.  It cannot be desired.

Therefore, effective steps should be taken to strengthen the safety of the factories for safe working environment, so that such incidents do not happen again.

Strict actions must be taken against those who are responsible for the incidents. Under the law, the boiler explosion will be properly investigated and responsible persons will be given exemplary punishment.
