Quick steps needed to resolve sufferings

It is regular that streets in the capital city get flooded in just a little rain. Waterlogging and acute traffic congestion are crippling the city dwellers’ life regularly. Water goes into houses and shops. The situation has been noticed for the last few days. It has been seen that people of different areas of the capital became waterlogged due to rain. The Secretariat, the commercial area of Motijheel, residential area of Mirpur and Mohammadpur and the posh area Gulshan-Dhanmondi are not out of the problem. Water gets stranded from knee to waist at different streets.

Waterlogging has become a perennial problem for the residents of Dhaka city. The city dwellers are to face untold sufferings. Especially office-goers face unlimited sufferings in the morning and in the afternoon. The condition of working people is more serious. Many types of under-construction development works increase the woe. In the Malibagh-Moghbazar area, the people have been experiencing terrible suffering for years due to the flyover construction. The waterlogging problem is becoming more difficult day by day. If the problem is not resolved quickly, we have to face more serious crisis in future.

Apart from this, digging roads by different utility agencies is one of the reasons of waterlogging. WASA, DESA, Tatas Gas and T &T dig the roads but there is no coordination between the organizations. One organization dig in a place, another organization comes later and digs another place. After the rain there creates many holes on the streets and as a result many become injured falling into the holes.

Inadequate drainage system is blamed for the waterlogging in the Dhaka city. Once we had a gravity drainage system of canals which are linked to surrounding rivers. Before modernization, these natural canals served as the mode of disposal of runoff water. However, with time, due to rapid urbanization water bodies and flood plains started being filled up. Dholai Khal, Motijheel  Khal, Begunbari Khal and Kallyanpur Khal have already been occupied and filled up. Besides, drains and sewerage lines are not regularly cleaned as a result the water flow is hampered.

The problems of water logging need to be resolved urgently. A comprehensive plan has to be taken in this regard and it is necessary to implement it quickly. There is also necessary to coordinate development works between the utility agencies. If any contracting company violates rule, strict disciplinary action will have to take against that company.

Above all, for the interest of all, initiatives have to be taken to free and dig the canals. To resolve waterlogging, it is necessary to clean the box culverts and drainage lines regularly and evacuate the illegal occupants in a bid to restore the natural canals. Waterlogging can be resolved if we can ensure natural flow of the canals through regular cleaning of drainage lines. The rivers and wetlands around the city have to be restored. The concerned authorities will have to take necessary measures immediately for the interest of city dwellers.
