Rana Plaza owner dies of COVID-19 infection

Abdul Khaleque, owner of multi-storied building Rana Plaza which collapsed on April 24 in 2013, has died after being infected with coronavirus or COVID-19.

He passed away at his residence in Savar upazila early Thursday (June 4), raising the total number of deaths in the upazila to nine.

Khaleque was taken to Enam Medical College on Sunday (May 31) as he was suffering from breathing difficulties, said Rawshan Ara, daughter of Abdul Khaleque.

But, the hospital authority did not get Khaleque admitted as he was not tested for COVID-19.

His sample was given on Monday (June 1) and the test results came back positive this morning. But Khaleque had died before the test results came.

Savar upazila health and family planning officer Sayemul Huda said the authority of Enam Medical College Hospital confirmed that Abdul Khaleque was infected with coronavirus.

Abdul Khaleque, father of Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana, was an accused of a number of cases filed after the building collapse that killed at least 1,136 people, mostly garment workers. He had been on bail for a long time.
