Robber killed in Rangpur 'gunfight'

Staff Correspondent, Rangpur: An alleged robber was killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Joyrampur Anowar village of the district's Mithapukur upazila early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Idris Ali, 31, son of Shakhawat Hossain of Monirampur Abason area of the upazila.

Law enforcers also seized a pistol, five rounds of bullets and lethal weapons from the scene.

Idris was accused in cases filed for robbery and mugging with different police stations.

Mozammel Hauque, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mithapukur Police Station, confirmed the news.

He said Idris was arrested while taking preparations for robbery at Baldipukur area. After interrogation, police accompanied by him conducted a drive at Joyrampur Anowar village to recover arms. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, his cohorts fired at police. Cops also retaliated for self-defence, leaving Idris dead when he tried to flee from custody.

The body was sent to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital for autopsy, he added.
