SC stays proceedings of DU VC panel

Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has stayed the activities of the newly-announced three-member Vice Chancellor panel of Dhaka University for appointing a new VC.

The court has also asked to settle the rule issued by the High Court on July 29 regarding the senate meeting within four weeks.

The three-member SC bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order on Thursday.

Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud moved for the petitioner while Advocate ASM Mezbah uddin argued for Dhaka University.

Earlier on Saturday, the three-member VC panel, comprising current Vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Treasurer Professor Kamal Uddin, and science faculty’s dean Md Azizur Rahman, was elected uncontested by less than half of the senate members.

The penal was nominated at a special senate session of the university held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban as per section 11 (1) of the Dhaka University Order 1973.
