Staff Correspondent: Siddiqur Rahman, a student of Government Titumir College who sustained eye injuries during a student movement in the capital's Shahbagh area, is being taken to Indian city of Chennai for better treatment.

Health and Family Welfare Ministry has taken all-out measures in this regard.

Porikkhit Chowdhury, Information officer of Health and Family welfare Ministry, confirmed the news on Monday evening.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare Mohammed Nasim asked Professor Golam Mostafa, Director of National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital, to ensure best treatments to bring back the eye sight of Siddiqur, Porikkhit Chowdhury said.

The government has taken all responsibilities including the cost of treatment of Siddiqur as per the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the health minister said.

Nasim said he is keeping regular contacts with the director and specialized physicians of the institute with an aim to inquire about the treatment of Siddiqur since the day he received injuries in his eyes.

Earlier, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader visited Siddiqur at the National Institute of Ophthalmology today.

"During the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed concern over the treatment of Siddiqur. She sent me to inquire about the treatment of Siddiqur," Quader told newsmen.

"Best treatments are being provided to Siddiqur," he added.

In reply to a query whether Siddiqur's eyes were injured in teargas shell shot by police, Quader said, "It's an allegation. Police has formed a three-member committee to look into the matter. The committee has been asked to submit report within three working days."

Siddiqur Rahman sustained injuries in his eyes during a demonstration on July 20 when students of seven government colleges, affiliated with the University of Dhaka, gathered at Shahbagh, demanding that their exam dates and routine be announced in time.
