Siddiqur undergoes eye surgery

Staff Correspondent: Indian physicians conducted a surgery at the eyes of Siddiqur Rahman, a student of Government Titumir College who sustained eye injuries during a student movement in the capital's Shahbagh area on July 20.

Siddiqur was taken at the operation theatre at Sankara Nethralaya in India's Chennai around 3:30pm on Friday and the operation ended at 6:30pm. But the condition of his eyes could not be known till filing this report at 8:15pm, said Professor Dr Golam Mostafa, director of National Institute of Ophthalmology.

Earlier on July 27, 23-year old Siddiqur was sent to Chennai in India for better treatment. The flight carrying Siddiqur left Dhaka at 1:00pm.

The government is bearing Siddiqur's medical costs.

Siddiqur sustained injuries in his eyes during a demonstration on July 20 when students of seven government colleges, affiliated with the University of Dhaka, gathered at Shahbagh, demanding that their exam dates and routine be announced in time.

The seven government colleges included Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawrdy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Mohila College, Mirpur Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College.
