Take efforts of permanent solution with integrated plan

Waterlogging and sufferings resulted from it have been constant companions for the dwellers of Dhaka city. No needs for heavy rain, incessant light rain is enough for washing away the city. Roads, streets even highways go under water.

The water also enters ground-floors of houses, shops, shopping malls and other business establishments. The city dwellers recently witnessed it. Torrential rain caused immense sufferings to the residents of Dhaka, as many low-lying areas went under knee- to waist-deep water, throwing the life out of gear.

Almost the same situation prevailed in the commercial capital Chittagong. Incessant rain and sea tide caused flooded many parts of the port city. Photos and news footages published on media can help understanding the situation easily. It was hard to make different between roads and grounds. There was no way to find out roads there. People experienced boat journey in chest-deep water on the roads.

The scenario was nothing new. All most the whole port city went under water in rainy season every year, caused damages worth crores. According media reports, low-lying areas of the commercial capital had been submerged for 12 days in last two months.  Incessant rain caused permanent waterlogging since Sunday last.

It is not visible whether there is any coordinated plan to remove waterlogging from the capital Dhaka. We see many areas submerge due to rain years after years, caused long tailback and sufferings to the city dwellers.

In some cases, sufferings of Dhaka waterlogging are worse than that of the port city Chittagong. Most of the main roads of Dhaka are filled in ditches. The condition is the worst in lanes. The streets turn into small canals due to rain. In addition,  many of the roads are digging up for development works, causing horrible traffic congestion and lack of transports to reach the destination.

Though rain and flood are natural disasters, no measure is seen to overcome the situation. There is no enough drainage system. The existing drainage system is filled with polythene and garbage. The situation has become avoidable for the city dwellers. The condition got worst this year.

Nobody knows when people of the two main cities will get relief from the sufferings. We obviously should found out a way to remove the curse. Immediate steps are needed to remove waterlogging. Authorities concerned should take effective measures to prevent the situation as soon as possible.
