Tenure for defence chiefs extended

Senior Correspondent: The cabinet gave final approval to the draft of Defence Services Chiefs (Appointment, Retirement, Salary and Allowance) Act 2017 with a maximum of four-year tenure for army, air force and navy chiefs.

The approval was given at the regular cabinet meeting at Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Alam briefed reporters after the meeting.

While briefing reporters, he said the draft law will allow defence chiefs to stay in office for the entire term even after the official retirement age of 59.

Earlier, there was no law regarding this. The appointment of the chiefs of the three forces had so far been dealt with in line with a circular, Joint Services Instructions or JSI. Once the draft law is passed in the parliament, the chiefs of the three forces will receive their appointment, retirement, salary, allowance and other facilities. The law is being enacted as a constitutional obligation exists, Shafiul said.

He said the JSI did not specify the tenures of the defence chiefs. The defence chiefs will be appointed by the president for four years as per the new law, he added.
