Tk 6,000cr project to modernize jute mills

Parliament Correspondent: Textiles and Jute Minister M Emajuddin Pramanik has said that with the help of China, the government has taken Tk 6,000 crore project to modernize 26 jute mills.

The minister said this while replying to a query from treasury bench lawmaker Bazlul Haque Harun in the House on Wednesday.

Pramanik  said the jute sector would regain its past glory soon, as the present government is working wholeheartedly for development of this potential sector by adopting some time-befitting and pragmatic steps.

He told the House a fresh initiative including open the closed jute mills, innovation and diversified use of jute in local and international markets, incentives to the jute sector.

In replaying to another query, Pramanik said the government has laid emphasis on the jute sector by establishing the Jute Commission and putting in place the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010.

According to the law, manufacturers have to use packaging materials made of jute fibre for up to 75 percent of products such as rice, paddy, wheat, sugar, seeds, fertilisers and saplings.
