Wide-ranging steps needed to curb militancy

A brutal massacre was carried out at Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, the diplomatic zone in the capital, a year ago. It was the worst gruesome terror attack in the history of Bangladesh.

A group of heinous militants made the attack at the aristocrat restaurant at night when the Muslims were busy to take preparations for Tarabi prayers in the month of Ramadan. At least 22 foreign and local nationals lost their lives in the barbarous massacre.

The incident suddenly shrank the way of Bangladesh's speedy developing economic process. Because, the attackers mainly targeted the foreigners who came here to play important roles in the country's development. Among the deceased, nine were Italians, seven Japanese, two Bangladeshis, one each from US and India. Besides, two police officials also sacrificed their lives while conducting operations against the militants.

All most all the Italians who were killed in the Holey Artisan attack were involved in garment trading, country's one of the  highest revenue earning sectors. The intriguers probably made the notorious attack so that Bangladesh faced troubles in exporting garment products in European countries.

The Japanese, who lost their lives in the heinous attack, came to Bangladesh as advisors of Metrorail project which is believed to be a revolutionary step taken by the incumbent government to develop the capital's communication system. It may be mentioned that Japan is considered as one of the closest development partners of Bangladesh.

But people of Bangladesh did not give chances to the conspirators to make fruitful their aims of hindering the country's development and labeling it (country) as a militancy hub.

Law enforcement agencies played important roles in this regard. Their brilliant steps of preventing the militants and stopping them in expanding their clutches are very much appreciable. However, we have to more alert against the enemies of the county and the nation.

Bangladesh government has taken a bunch of firm steps to curb the militancy after the barbarous Holey Artisan attack. As a result, our law enforcement agencies are successfully foiling the activities of neo-JMB.

Since the fearsome incident, law enforcers made successful operations against militants at different places across the country including the capital's Kalyanpur, Narayanganj, Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Gazipur and Tangail.

Alongside, public awareness has also increased against the terrorism across the country.

Though people feel relieved from tension by the steps government taking against the militancy, memories of the gruesome attack still chase minds of many.

Another matter of concern is that involving women and children in the militancy and influencing them to be self-killers. In this case, it is not enough for the law enforcement agencies alone to root out the curse, every person of the society needs to be cautious against it.

So, we should take wide spreading steps to curb and root out the militancy. Country's people do not support terrorism. So, the government should step forward with effective planning.   It is needed to get the youths involved in anti-militant campaigns in the country's schools, colleges and universities. In this case, results would depend how much youths to make involved in the process.

Steps should also be taken to increase awareness among guardians. Alongside, it is also urgent to enhance the ability of law enforcement agencies and detectives and to modernize them.
