Writ for appointment of Ombudsman

Staff Correspondent: A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its direction to appoint Ombudsman.

High Court lawyer Yunus Ali Akond filed the writ petition on Wednesday morning.

Cabinet secretary, law secretary, Speaker and the President's secretary were made respondents to the petition.

According to the article 77 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, there is a rule to appoint Ombudsman. But up to 1980, no definite attempt was made to establish the office of Ombudsman.

Once established the Ombudsman will have the power to investigate any action taken by a ministry, a public officer or a statutory authority and such other powers and functions as may be prescribed by Parliament.
