Farmers not interested in selling paddy to govt

The government started buying paddy from April 26. But, the farmers across the country are not interested in selling paddy, rice to the government. As a result, an uncertainty has been created to fulfill the collection target of the government.

Whereas the government is mulling to collect rice, paddy in time following two plans. Even, policy has been changed to tackle the situation.

Sources said, around 2 crore 4 lakh 36 thousands metric tonnes of paddy has been harvested during boro season. Of them, the government set a target to collect 19.5 lakh metric tonnes of rice and paddy. But, there is not mentionable pace in buying boro paddy in last two months.

An official of food ministry said, the farmers are not interested in selling paddy to the government because the market price is similar to the government price. The ministry issued new directions in this regard. There is a possibility to fulfill the target within August 14.

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said, farmers are getting fair price as government started buying paddy. New directions have been issued to speedup boro paddy collection. Hope, the target of collection will be fulfilled in time.
