Price of 4 eggs now exceeds Tk 50

The price of essential commodities, particularly food items, has continued to increase even every day at the kitchen markets. After the hike in the prices of edible oil, rice, sugar, chickpea, lentil, vegetables and some other essentials, egg, a source of protein, has now witnessed an unusual increase in its price.

Visiting several markets in the capital on Saturday (August 13), it has been noticed that in the retail market, four chicken eggs (red), which sold at Tk 40 a week ago, are selling at Tk 50-52 today. That means the price of four eggs rose by at least Tk 10-Tk 12.

Again, 12 chicken eggs (red), which sold at Tk 115- Tk 120 a week back, are now selling at Tk 150-Tk 155. That means the price of 12 eggs rose by Tk 30- Tk 35.

In the wholesale market, each chicken egg (red) is selling at Tk 12 and 12 eggs at Tk 144.

When asked about the unusual hike in the prices of eggs, sellers cited hike in transportation cost due to fuel price hike and reduction in the production of chicken and egg due to shutdown of many farms.
