Five die after boat capsizes in Tangail

At five people have died after a boat capsized in a waterbody in Basail Upazila of Tangail.

The incident took place at Gilabari area on Friday afternoon.

Fire man Shafiqul Islam of Basail Fire Service Station confirmed the matter.

It could not be known immediately whether someone had been missing in the incident.

The dead were known as Taijuddin, 50, boatman of Gilabari village, Jomela Begum, 60, wife of Manju Mia of the same village, and her son Hamidur Rahman Rono, 35, wife of Ata Mia, 32, of the same area and Shah Alam, 25, son of Haider Ali of Koiamadhu village under Sakhipur upazila.

Local Union Parishad member Rubel Mia confirmed the news.

He said, ‘They were moving towards Gilabari from Dariapur by boat as the street was washed away by flood. The boatman lost control of boat after he came in contact with electricity wire in the waterbody. Then, boat sank as all people in it started moving to and fro with panic, leaving five dead.’

He, however, could not tell whether someone is missing in the incident.
