Flood situation improves but sufferings continue

Flood situation has improved in six upazilas in Manikganj district but thousands of people are facing untold sufferings as they are marooned by flood waters.

According to the officials at Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), water levels of the Padma, Jamuna, Kaliganga and Dhaleshwari rivers marked further fall but those were still flowing above the danger marks at different points.

Md Faruk Ahmed of BWDB said water level in the Padma river decreased 6cm in the past 24 hours at Aricha point and the falling trend may continue. But it was flowing 35 cm above the danger level.

Md Badar Uddin of BWDB said water level in the Dhaleshwari river decreased 8 cm in the past 24 hours. But it was flowing 107 cm above the danger level.

BWDB official Md Rafikul Islam said water level in the Kaliganga river decreased 8 cm in the past 24 hours. But it was flowing 87 cm above the danger level.

Many families in the district were marooned and the crops fields were inundated.

Deputy Commisioner SM Ferdous said 330 tonnes of rice and three lakh and 50 thousand taka have been distributed among the flood victims.
