That youth detained in UP Building found dead

A youth who was detained in a room of Haripur Union Parishad (UP) Complex under Paba upazila of Rajshahi has been found dead.

On-duty village police noticed his hanging body with window’s grill early Sunday (November 29).

However, relatives accused him of being murdered.

The youth was known as Mofazzal Hossain, 26, son of Tofazzal Hossain of Jugalpur village of Tanor upazila of the district. He was a day labourer. He got married to daughter of Rafiqul Islam with family arrangement in Nalpukur village of Haripur union 12 days ago.

UP Chairman Bazle Rezbi Al-Hasan Munjil went into hiding since the incident. His mobile phone was also being found switched off. His father-in-law along with other family members also disappeared after incident. However, he was reached over phone around 9:30am on Sunday (November 29).

He said, “Though the marriage was completed several days ago, but Rafiqul’s daughter returned home. She was not willing to continue the relation with her husband. Mofazzal visited his father-in-law’s home 2 days ago. Locals left him (Mofazzal) at Union Parishad Complex in drunk state on Saturday (November 28). People of both groups were supposed to sit at the UP Complex on Sunday (November 29). So, Mofazzal was kept in the room for the night. But on-duty village police notice him hanging with the grill of window in the morning. Later, the matter was informed with the local police station.”

Deceased’s cousin Uzzal alleged that Mofazzal was hanged after being murdered. People of both groups sat in the UP Complex on Saturday (November 28) over the matter. Then, UP Chairman asked them to pay a total of Tk 1,30,000 for settlement. Otherwise, he will be handed over to police with drugs.

Mazharul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Damkura Police Station of Rajshahi, said, “No injury mark was found visible on the body while making the inquest report. However, relatives accused him of being murdered. Filing a case was under process.”

He said, “It would clear whether it was a murder or suicide, after the autopsy. But the chairman went into hiding. Deceased’s father-in-law and other family members are also absconding. If any case is filed against someone, he/she would be arrested.”
