Newly elected councillor killed in post-polls violence

A newly-elected councillor of Sirajganj municipality was killed in a post-polls violence took place just after announcing the results.

The deceased was known as Toriqul Islam, 45, son of Abdul Quddus of Notun Bhangabari area of the town.

The voting was held in the municipality from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday (January 16).

In the evening, the unofficial results of the municipality were announced when Toriqul Islam was declared as councillor for ward no 6.

Sadar upazila election officer Azizar Rahman said, “Torqul won the polls as councillor of ward 6 by 85 votes with Pomegranate symbol.

Just after announcement of the results, a clash took place between supporters of winner Toriqul Islam and defeated candidate in front of Notun Bhangabari Primary School centre around 7:30 pm. Toriqul Islam sustained stab wound in the clash, leaving him seriously injured. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Sirajganj town where he succumbed to his injuries around 8:15 pm.

Sirajganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bahauddin Faruki confirmed about the death.
