Contractors have stopped food supply to godowns of Dighinala, Panchhari and Mahalchhari upazilas in Khagrachhari district in protest against extortion and harassment by regional organizations and transport workers.
The local administration has not been able to take any action yet despite the strike called by food supply contractors since February 18. As a result, uncertainty is looming over the food supply this month to the ration card holders of Bengali and hilly communities.
According to the contractors, extortion is going on recklessly in the name of regional organizations on Dighinala, Panchhari and Mahalchhari roads. Vehicle documents and invoices are snatched, and workers are beaten if we fail to give money, they alleged.
The local administration has been informed about these. We will continue our strike to stop food supply if until this problem is resolved, they said.
Dighinala Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Ullah said a meeting has been held with law enforcement agencies over the matter.
He also said steps will be taken to resolve the stalemate quickly.
There are six food godowns in Dighinala, Panchhari and Mahalchhari upazilas of the district.
