Supporters of 2 mayoral candidates clash in presence of minister

Supporters of two municipal mayoral candidates clashed in Brahmanbaria's Kasba upazila over holding a procession in the presence of Law Minister Advocate Anisul Haq.

The clash took place in front of the Upazila Parishad around 11:30 am on Friday (February 5).

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kasba Thana Alamgir Bhuiyan confirmed the news.

The two mayoral candidates are Emran Uddin Jewel, the current mayor of Kasba municipality, and MA Aziz, president of the upazila unit of Juba League. Both of them are candidates in the upcoming Kasba municipality elections.

Citing locals, the OC said the distribution of smart cards started at 11.00am in the presence of the law minister in the Upazila Parishad. Several supporters of Aziz locked into a clash with Jewel's supporters at the time. At one stage, huge number of supporters of two groups   involved in the clash.

The clash lasted till 12.30pm. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured in the incident. Additional policemen have been deployed in the area, the police official said.
