Sundarbans fire yet to be doused in 24 hours

A fire that broke out at Daser Bharani area under Sarankhola Range of the Sundarbans East Forest Division around 11:00am on Monday (May 3) could not be doused even after 24 hours.

The work to douse the fire resumed this morning although it was suspended at night. During the night time, the fire spread to many places in a scattered way.

After visiting the spot, it has been found that the fire from its originating place has spread to many parts of the forest.

Md Golam Sarwar, deputy assistant director of Bagerhat fire service and civil defense station, said the fire originated 6/7 kilometers within the forest from locality. There was no source of water within four kilometers from the fire originating place. As a result, the fire could not be doused immediately.

He, however, said the construction work of the pipe for water has been completed. Within an hour, it can be possible to scatter water for dousing the fire.

He said three units of the fire service along with people of the locality and forest workers are working to bring the fire under control.

It is expected that the fire could be doused completely by today.
