Sundarbans damaged by Yaas, 4 deer found dead

The world heritage site, the Sundarbans, has been damaged by strong wind and tidal surge due to cyclone Yaas.

Sundarbans was flooded by 5-6 feet tidal surge which damaged several vehicles, watch towers, houses and roads.  At least four deer drowned during heavy tidal surge.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Sundarbans East Division Muhammad Belayet Hossain said this on Thursday morning.

Muhammad Belayet Hossain said due to impact of the cyclone Yaas, the water-level in rivers and canals of the Sundarbans increased. About 5-6 feet tidal surge flooded the Sundarbans on Wednesday. The tidal surge damaged 19 jetties, six trawlers, two houses, a foot rail, a watch tower, four staff barracks and a rest house in the East Sundarbans. Tin of ten offices were blown up by heavy wind. Salt water has entered nine ponds, known as a source of fresh water. Two dead deer were recovered from the Sundarbans and two from the locality. Two crocodile sheds at the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Center in the Sundarbans have been damaged. As a result, the East Sundarbans Division has lost Tk 60 lakh.
