4 receive bullet-wounds in Companiganj clash

At least four people were shot in a clash between two rival factions of ruling Awami League in Noakhali's Companiganj upazila on Saturday noon (June 12).

The injured were identified as AL leader Fakhrul Islam Sabuj, 55, his son Chayon, 20, niece Arian, 23, and Ridoy, 28, hailed from Rupnagar village of Charkakra union.

Witnesses said the followers of former upazila chairman Mizanur Rahman Badal put blockade Bashurhat-Peshkarhat road. Later, police tried to evacuate the location from the spot which triggered the clash. At one stage, police charged baton to disperse the protesters. Meanwhile, the four people received bullet injuries.

Earlier, former upazila chairman Mizanur Rahman Badal and other AL leaders were heading towards Dhaka around 9:00am. But, 40-50 supporters of Quader Mirza attacked Badal’s motorcade and injured him. Following the incident, a tension is prevailing in the area.

Companiganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saifuddin Anwar said, police opened fire when they were attacked in the area. The number of injured people is not confirmed yet.
