An Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) of police shot three people, including a woman and her child, to death in broad daylight in Kushtia on Sunday (June 13).

He was known as Soumen Mitra, engaged in Fultola Police Station of Khulna.

The incident sparked off outrage in Khulna police as he left Khulna for Kushtia without leave to committee the murder.

According to locals, the incident happened at Customs Junction area of Kushtia town around 11:00 am. Locals caught the ASI and handed him over to police.

The deceased were known as Asma Khatun (34), her son Robin (4), and Shakil Khan (28).

Asma is wife of ASI Soumen. It was Asma’s second marriage. Robin was son of Asma from her first marriage.

Fultola police sources said ASI Soumen Mitra had been missing since Sunday (June 13) morning. Colleagues could not find him. He did not even take leave. The matter came to light after he was arrested for triple murder in Kushtia.

Khulna District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Mahbub Hasan confirmed the matter. He said, “ASI Soumen arrested in Kushtia is engaged in Fultola police station. He had not been seen there since Sunday morning. He came to Kushtia unofficially without taking leave. Departmental action will be taken against him.”

Fultola Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahatab Sheikh told risingbd that ASI Soumen Mitra was absent during the morning roll call (attendance). He came out with the government pistol and ammunition allotted in his name. But as Soumen was very cold-headed, none of them could understand that he was planning to commit such a big murder.

Soumen, hailed from Magura, transferred to Fultola Police Station in December 2020.
