Derogatory remarks against PM: BNP leader jailed for 7yrs

A cyber tribunal in Rajshahi sentenced a local BNP leader to seven-year imprisonment on charges of derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on social media.
Rajshahi Cyber Tribunal judge Md Ziaur Rahman passed the order around 11:00am on Monday (September 20).
The convicted person was known as Akhtar Hossain, 45, general secretary of ward number-5 of the Sherkole union BNP unit under Singra upazila in Natore.
The court also fined him Tk 1 lakh, in default of which he would serve an additional three-month imprisonment.
The case statement said, on September 2, 2015, Akhtar shared a post making defamatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on social media. Later, Sherkol union Awami League unit vice-president Mokhlesur Rahman filed a case against Akhtar.
