Workers of a garment factory are staging demonstrations blocking highways in Bason area under Gazipur city corporation demanding their salaries as they found the factory shut this morning.
Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway came to a halt due to the demonstrations beginning from 9am on Sunday (October 10).
Like every day, workers of Interlink Apparels Ltd came to join the work. When they arrived at the factory, they found it shut until October 24 although today was set to pay their salaries. Finding the factory closed, the workers got angry and started demonstrations on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway demanding salaries.
At one stage of the demonstration, the agitated workers blocked the highway, halting vehicular movement.
Sohan, a worker of the factory, said, “Owner of the factory often makes such troubles in time of paying wages to the workers and lays off our fellows without showing any reason. That’s why, we are in demonstration.”
When contacted, the manager of the factory could not be reached for comments on the issue.
