Flood situation worsens in Sunamganj, 216 schools closed

Due to heavy rains and onrush of hilly water, flood situation has worsened in Sunamganj. Flood water has inundated many new areas of the district, rendering thousands of people marooned.

Flood water has entered many houses of Sunamganj sadar, Bishwamvarpur, Chhatak, Derai, Dowarabazar and Shalla upazilas. Road communications of four upazilas have been disconnected with the district headquarters.

Executive Engineer of Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB) Md Samsuddoha said the Surma river is flowing 17cm above the danger level on Wednesday afternoon.

Many fish farms have been washed away. Flood water has damaged crops of the areas. The flood- affected people are living under the open sky now. A total of 216 primary schools have been declared closed as flood has hit the areas. Shelter centre and control rooms have been opened at 28 schools.

Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Md Jahangir Hossain said 15 metric tonnes of rice, Tk 2.5 lakh, dry food and cooked food are being distributed among the flood victims. All the victims will be listed and brought under the assistance of the government.

The situation has been created in Sunamganj due to heavy rain in Meghalaya and Cherapujni of India.
