Haor people marooned, 28 schools closed

Due to heavy rains and onrush of hilly water, flood situation has worsened in Sunamganj. Flood water has inundated many new areas of the district, rendering thousands of people marooned.

Flood water has damaged many roads in Sunamganj sadar, Bishwamvarpur, Chhatak, Derai, Dowarabazar and Shalla upazilas. Road communications of many upazilas have been disconnected with the district headquarters.

The Protabpur bridge on Chhatak-Sunamganj road in Doalia union under Dowarabazar upazila has been washed away.

Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB) said the Surma river is flowing 16cm above the danger level on Friday morning.  The water of Jadukata, Mohasing, Monu, Dholai and Piain is also flowing above the danger level.

Flood water has entered many areas of Sunamganj town, causing untold sufferings of dwellers.

Flood water has damaged crops of the areas. Many fish farms have been washed away in the district.

Flood water has entered a total of 220 primary schools, of which 28 have been declared closed.

Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Md Jahangir Hossain said rice, cash money, dry food and cooked food are being distributed among the flood victims.

The situation has been created in Sunamganj due to heavy rain in Meghalaya and Cherapujni of India.
