PEC-JSC cancelled: Educationists suggest for effective strategy

All educational institutions of the country remain closed from March 18 due to coronavirus outbreak. The government has already cancelled Primary Education Completion (PEC) and its equivalent Ibtedai and Junior School Certificate (JSC) and equivalent Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) examinations as the situation is still unchanged. Guardians, educationalists and teachers have applauded the government’s decision.

However, educationalists said an evaluation system should be put in place so that students can express their talents.

They also think that the government should take effective strategies to keep the students in studies.

When asked, Siraj Majumder, father of a student named Rabin Majumder, said sending students to school is risky because of the coronavirus situation. I applaud the government’s decision of cancelling examinations in this situation.”

Another guardian of a student Masudul Haque said, “The decision of cancelling examination is a good one. However, immediate action should be taken on how to overcome the loss of students’ learning. The learning process through radio-television is not reaching many students. The necessary supervision should be done by the local administration and teachers is being conducted properly.”

A student Mainul Islam said, “I feel good as the examination has been cancelled. A teacher is giving lessons at home. I’m studying the lessons regularly.”

Another student Riazul Karim Rafi said, “I’m watching television lessons at home. Besides, my parents are teaching me the topics of textbooks.”

Anowar Hossain, assistant teacher of Rosangiri Ahmadia Government Primary School, said the situation across the country is critical because of coronavirus pandemic. In this situation, if educational institutions open, the students will fall in a lot of risk. I think the decision of cancelling examinations was appropriate.

When asked, Zobaida Nishat, assistant teacher of Chandna High School, said students are not coming to school because of coronavirus. The government has also canceled examinations. However, I think students are not studying at home regularly. In this case, the issue of supervision should be further strengthened by all our teachers.

Information officer of the Education Ministry M A Khair said, “Many more teachers are involved in organising the examinations along with millions of students across the country. When a student will be infected with the virus after attending the examination, not only the students in the hall, as well as teachers will be at risk. So, it can be said there was no alternative but to cancel the test.”

Educationalist Rashed K Chowdhury also echoed same. She said, “Now it will not be right for students to appear in national exams. The government has taken timely action.”

However, she also demanded the cancellation of such examinations for junior students permanently, especially the exams like PEC and Ibtedai.

Noted educationalist and former VC of Dhaka University A A M S Arefin Siddique said naturally the examinations for children such as PEC-JSC should not be held. This creates their stress. There is no such system in the developed world.

He also thinks that a separate assessment system can be set up for them without conducting a public examination.
